The Easy 90’s Styles That Are Perfect For Today:

It’s a fashion flashback that part of me really doesn’t mind at all: the 90’s are having a trending moment and some of my favorite and most comfortable pieces are right on trend this year.  (Side note:  I can’t really wrap my head around the thought I am old enough to see my younger-year’s style revived, but that’s just me.)  Who can forget Kate Moss in a slip dress? Or the Friends cast wearing jean jackets?  Angelina Joli in tank tops and cargos?  Drew Barrymore in floral mini dresses?  I never gave up my love of bias cut dresses, slip on pool slides, and the perfect black knapsack, and actually neither did the fashion world as a whole.  Those 90’s staples have become classics and are timeless now.

Laid-back style that was sexy at the same time meant that nearly everything in your wardrobe could be intermixed and worn together to create different looks.  Nothing felt forced or looked like it was trying really hard to make a style statement.  Models today have pounced on the 90’s style for castings, and designers have picked up their street style and made up-to-date versions, adapting them for today.  In the 90’s we wore biker shorts anywhere and everywhere, and that was before the athleisure trend.  Today’s versions are just as sporty, pairing up with everything from tailored blazers, to crop tops, to oversized t-shirts.  I will wear them to the gym swapping them out for short shorts or leggings.  I will live in cargos, scrappy tank tops and pool slides all spring with a jean jacket thrown on top.  For summer I will cool down with floral mini dresses, warp midi skirts with spaghetti strap tank tops, and slip dresses for both day and night.  And my new hats for the season will be various bucket hats, giving the straw fedoras and Panama hats of so many seasons now a much needed break.  And they are packable! Love.

I’ve done the research for you so you can get shopping yourself.  Summer style simplified, comfort guaranteed:

XOXO Shelley

Face and Body Misting: Treat or Treatment? Both!

Remember when we first started seeing people spritzing their face with plain water mists on warm days? It seemed over-the-top and and a bit obsessive, and like an extra beauty step that offered basically nothing except offer a moment of freshness. And in fact they were drying their skin out and leaving it without a protective barrier of moisturizer.  Mists today are so much more than plain water and offer skincare benefits on the fly.  There are as many reasons to mist as their are products to address various needs, so it’s time to take another look:

FACE MIST BENEFITS:   Use as a toner before moisturizing to calm and prep the skin.  Mist for a smoothing layer before applying makeup.  Revive and refresh makeup midday with a blending sponge.  Mist for a quick application of extra moisturizer or sunscreen post-workout.  Use mid or post flight to hydrate parched skin from air travel.  NOTE: Mists that are meant to “set” makeup contain ingredients that bind the makeup to the skin, not allowing it to properly breathe so it can irritate the skin or cause breakouts, not to mention creating a makeup finish that is mask-like - NOT a good look.

KEY INGREDIENTS:   Just like your favorite cleansers, toners and moisturizers, look for mists that contain hyaluronic acid which is a humectant and can hold 1000 times its weight in water, plumping and helping the skin retain an optimum moisture level.  Ultra-hydrated skin is healthier, glows, is more youthful, and less likely to show signs of stress resulting in irritation, dryness, and wrinkles.  Hyaluronic acid  is a powerhouse and should be a key ingredient in your skincare routine. Mists infused with mineral oils help smooth the skin, lock in moisture, and improve the look of makeup applied over it.   Rosewater, cucumber, aloe, and green tea mists have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing irritation and redness.

BODY MIST BENEFITS:   Apart from giving a refreshing boost, body mists offer a lot of skincare perks.  Body spritzers offer great hydration that can lock in moisturizers. Mists can give skin a sheen or glow, or create an even-toned bronze look.  Mist mid-day or post-workout with a lighter version of your favorite fragrance in mist-form without perfume-overloading.  Use at bedtime to help you fall asleep.

KEY INGREDIENTS:   Wake up: look for mists with citrus and florals to refresh and invigorate, both the skin and the senses.  Escape: tropical scents like coconut and vanilla channel a warm, sexy beach vacation.  Sleep: lavender soothes and aids in getting restful sleep.

I stash mists at my desk, in my gym bag, keep a mini-spritzer in my handbag, and have more than a couple on my vanity, and while it does feel a bit indulgent I love giving my skin an extra does of hydration to keep me looking and feeling fresh on the fly mid-day.  One step to glowing, hydrated, and refreshed skin is a good deal in my book.

Spring Shopping: Creating a Sunglass Wardrobe

I always love new sunglasses for spring and summer, and now that spring is almost (!) here, in my optimism I am seeking out the best designer trends to see what will actually work in real life.  A lot of the new designs are just Insta-bait and are not at all wearable in real life without garnering gasps everywhere you go, so sticking to styles that are fun while functional is my number one goal.  A lot of celebrities have jumped on the 80’s MTV styles with sharp angles and bling that really only looked good in early music videos, just to grab headlines and make a statement on social media, but that doesn’t mean it’s flattering in real life.  I want to make a statement, but not that sort of statement.  The skinny lenses of the last two years has been done and dusted, and offered little if any protection from the sun. Moving on!

Choosing new sunnies has never been this much fun, with so many new options to suit any style and mood.  Colored frames are having a big moment, breaking the typical conservative rules of what is suitable for sunglasses.  Now you can match your blue eyeshadow, your pink hair, or your nude makeup palette. No color is out of bounds and that means there is a pair for every mood and outfit.  Another style that is ultra-flattering is the large square frame in both metals and plastics, light-lensed or dark.  Talk about feminine!  My personal all-time favorite shape that suits my face the best is the cat eye, and this year’s oversized glasses with dark lenses give maximum coverage, tons of mystery, and go with any outfit, anywhere I go. This updated classic will elevate my daily style and get plenty of play year-round, going just as well with a ponytail and makeup-free face after the gym or long flight, as it will when I go for full on Hollywood with strong lip color and statement outfit.

I’ll be choosing one pair of designer glasses as an investment piece and shopping for similar styles at cheap price points to give me an updated sunglass wardrobe without the financial ouch, to give me maximum coordinating style points.  I’m taking a pass on the plastic aviators, over-sized shield, geek chic, and small round metal styles. The were designed to look sensational on the runway and in editorials, but not to make anyone look gorgeous in real life.
Bring on the sun!

                                                                 XOXO Shelley

West Coast Surfer Style Gets a Luxe Upgrade

From beach to street: the athleisure trend just took a high fashion style turn mixing surfer style with glam cuts, prints, and details for an edgy look that is right at home in an urban environment.  As tempting as it is to live in yoga wear all day, every day, there is no need to choose comfort over cool.

Look for sporty-chic pieces such as boxy t-shirts and tops with artisanal tie-dye prints and artistic details, stripes with fringe, neoprene sandals that are made for walking, body con mini dresses with graphic details, unconventional florals, graphic swimsuits and body wear that emphasize the waist, and the return of the biker short worn with everything from workout wear to blazers.  Add small gold jewelry pieces and easy slicked back hair for a west coast vibe.  I’m shopping now for my spring getaway!

New Skincare Treats and Treatments to Chase Away the Winter Blues

It’s time to banish the winter blahs with indulgent products that plump, nourish, soothe and refresh the skin.  This year’s new crop of beauty treats are as much fun to use as they are effective. I Dew Care Ice Cream Masks in Matcha Mood, Cake My Day, and Berry Groovy look like gelato and feel just as rich on skin, while Kopari’s Coconut Detox Mask has probiotics to nourish the skin’s microbiome protective layer while hydrating with coconut oil.  Masks that smell and feel like dessert without the guilt? Yes please!

Overnight treatments are so easy to use: just apply, go to bed, and wake with a fresh, glowing complexion.  GlamGlow’s Good In Bed Passionfruit Softening Night Cream hydrates, exfoliates, and nourishes the skin while you sleep.  Nurse Jamie Miracle Base Beauty Oil is a versatile treat that can be used on it’s own or added to moisturizer and massaged into the skin with your favorite beauty tool. Containing 100% botanical oils it soothes irritation and inflammation.

Adding a serum takes your skincare regime from basic beauty to glow pro.  My Daily Dose of Uplift Serum by Skin Inc. is a powerhouse with nutrient-rich marine collagen to help improve the skin’s firmness and elasticity, antioxidants to protect, vitamins C + E to reduce wrinkles, and hyaluronic acid to plump.  Use morning and night to improve the condition of your skin and maintain a natural glow.  Alpyn Beauty’s PlantGenius Survival Serum contains three different acids to reduce discoloration and to refine the skin tone, hyaluronic acid and squalene to hydrate, and licorice extract to brighten.

Don’t forget your lips! I love Fresh Sugar Mint Rush Freshening Lip Treatment which is rich in oils to soften and hydrate, and sugar to prevent moisture loss. Press the lips together to re-activate the product’s ingredients for up to 24 hour protection.

Spring is not that fare away, even if it feels like the deep freeze might never leave and  pampering your skin for the warm days ahead while indulging your senses puts the treat in treatment.
